Provincetown Open Space Committee Votes for “Warbler Woods” for Name of Newly Acquired East End Conservation Area
Short-List of Names came from community
The previously known area called “Mayflower Heights Woods” which includes 802, 820, 820A, 824, 828, 832 Commercial Street has been officially renamed “Warbler Woods” by the Provincetown Open Space Committee by an unanimous vote on August 16th.
The Provincetown Conservation Trust opened a poll to the community asking for name suggestions. The top names from that poll included the following suggestions:
Bangsville Sanctuary
Meeshawn Woods
Mt. Gilboa Woods
Wampanoag Woods
Maple Grove Ridge
Warbler Woods/Ridge
Before deciding, the Open Space Committee had Provincetown’s Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Office (DEI) led by Director Donna Walker send the two proposed Native American names to the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to see if there was an historic link to tribes using this specific land. The tribe recommended against naming land not owned by native tribes with Native American names.
This left 4 names and the Open Space Committee decided to vote on the 4. By a vote of 4-0-0 the committee voted in favor of Warbler Woods. Warblers are regularly seen in these parcels by birders who frequent the area, especially since it abuts the Maple Grove Bird Sanctuary owned by the PCT.
